The art of the hand-built model constructed from simple cardboard, paper and PVA glue is a staple within our design practice, sitting comfortably amongst 3D renderings and sketchup modelling.

There’s nothing more seductive than handing a beautiful handmade box to a Client at one of our first meetings, watching them open what we have termed the ‘magicians box’ of architectural concepts. Like pandora’s box when lifting the lid it may contain an abstract set of design ideas or a literal representation of what we are designing.

It’s a starting point of discussion between Client and Architect, non-threatening and a very inclusive design tool to open discussion and gain a response to our direction.

THE ART OF THE MODEL

MAGICIAN’S BOX

Since 1998 until the present we have been been seducing our Clients with the ‘art of the model’. A simple design device that’s not overly sophisticated in its final form but provides enough information so we can determine if we are all on the same path.

A very simple design exercise that’s a great conversation starter bringing them into our design world. A design tool that is presented to our team of contractors, joiners, tilers and crafts people so they can provide input into how this can be built.

It never ceases to impress and a non-threatening design exercise that is accessible to everyone as most Clients cannot understand 2-dimensional drawings however give them a model and everyone has an opinion.

Paper cardboard and glue the simple things ignite the design idea for each and every project we undertake.
