As an innovative architectural practice we donʼt follow trends. We start from a gut driven response to each and every architectural brief we work on. The hair salon was based on a strict set of design rules that we established early on in response to the Client brief.

We brought ‘Madame Pompadour’ to Sydney in the abstract sense of what we thought would be a chic black & white digitally printed parisian apartment with touch of pompadour pink.

We build those set of rules as an architectural diorama concepts, which becomes a valuable demonstration tool to not only the Client but also when costing the project. From there we dissect the model and breakitdowntoits individualcomponents. We then analyse each component at a larger scale and start asking questions about functionality, materials and design aesthetics. From there the design starts to materialise and we can then steer the project within the parameters we have established.

BRAD NGATA

UPTOWN @ IVY

An exquisitely designed jewel box of a hair salon playing on the notion of a chic french apartment.

The design philosophy - a witty, innovative and chic hair salon in Sydney based on the theatrical re-interpretation of a grand french salon once owned by Madame Pompadour.

There are two distinct zones, the cool monastic washing/reception rooms and the french style cutting salon.

Hard wearing digitally printed lithographic panels, oak chevron floors, silk curtains, bevel mirrors and embossed silver laminate cabinetry create the ultimate theatrical backdrop to Brad Ngata’s skilled scissor hands.

Construction commences February 2007.

Practical Completion July 2008.
